The World's First Cell Phone

The World's First Cell Phone

Who: Martin Cooper, Inventor. Graduated Illinois Institute of Technology in 1950. Enlisted in US Naval Reserves and was a submarine officer in the Korean War.He received his Master’s Degree from IIT in electrical engineering in 1957. In 2004, IIT awarded Cooper an honorary doctorate degree. He currently is on the university’s board of trustees.

Cooper has stated that his vision of a portable cellular phone came from Captain Kirk's personal communicator on the show Star Trek.

When: Martin Cooper joined Motorola in 1954 as a senior development engineer. He developed the first cellular-like portable police radio, which was produced in 1967.In 1973, he and his team worked on the idea of a handheld radio communication device and worked to bring it to the public market for over a decade. (Contributed by: Simon)

Where: Most-all of the development of the DynaTAC took place in Motorola's Bell Labs. Though there were cellular devices before the DynaTAC, they were much too large and consumed way too much power to be carried by a person. They were installed in luxury cars and such, but could not be used without the car's engine running. The first call from a cell phone took place from somewhere on 53rd/54th Avenue in NY, NY to their direct competitors, AT&T's Bell Systems on April 3rd, 1973.

What: The first ever cell phone. It stood 10 inches tall and was 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. It could hold as many as 30 previously called phone numbers in it, had the capacity of 30 minutes of talking time with 8 hours of standby, but took 10 hours to recharge. It also only came in white. Used Until: It was used until officially becoming obsolete when the MicroTAC came out in 1996.(Contributed by: Simon)

How it Works: There are a lot of steps to go through between you and the person on the other side. First, you speak into the phone. Then, the phone converts your voice from an analog to a digital signal. The phone’s radio then contacts the cell tower. Then, that same tower relays the signal over conventional grounded wires to the tower that is supplying cell service to the other person. The other tower then sends the signal to the other phone, where the signal is converted from digital back to analog so the other person can hear it.
